STADIUM THEATRE
ABOUT
Stadium Theatre Performing Arts Centre & Conservatory is one of the last surviving examples of the majestic vaudeville-era theatres still in operation. Built in 1926 at 28 Monument Square in downtown Woonsocket, the venue features a distinctive stadium-style seating arrangement that gives every audience member an unobstructed view of the stage—a feature that inspired its name. The beautifully appointed auditorium, designed by renowned Providence architects Perry & Whipple, combines elegant Art Deco styling with elaborate decorative details.
WHAT TO EXPECT
The 1,273-seat theatre retains much of its original grandeur with restored architectural details and updated technical systems. Shows range from community theatre productions to professional touring acts and concerts. The venue features a fully functioning historic Wurlitzer theatre pipe organ (original from 1926). Expect an intimate, classic theatre experience in an ornate 100-year-old setting.
HISTORY
Stadium Theatre opened on September 27, 1926, as a vaudeville house, launched with the film "Lois Moran in 'Padlocked'" and featuring organist Arthur J. Martel performing on its Wurlitzer. The theatre was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1976 before eventually closing in 1985. A grassroots "Save Our Stadium" Committee formed in 1991, raising approximately $3 million. The renovated venue reopened in 2001 and has since hosted world-class performers like Liza Minnelli, Cher, and George Winston.
