PROVIDENCE
UPTOWN THEATER
ABOUT
The Uptown Theater is a newly restored 1,100-capacity entertainment venue in the heart of Providence's Federal Hill neighborhood, hosting live music, comedy, film, and special events. Originally built in 1926 and recently reopened in August 2025 after comprehensive restoration, the theater features iconic red plush seats and an elaborate facade with pressed metal trim designed by renowned Italo-American architect Oresto di Saia. The dual-level lobby bars, restored ceiling, and state-of-the-art sound system offer both authenticity and contemporary comfort.
WHAT TO EXPECT
The venue recently underwent eight months of extensive restoration including new electrical and plumbing, advanced air conditioning, and new seating on the first floor. The theater programs comedy acts, national touring bands, and special events. The carefully restored architectural elements—including ornate ceiling details and original red plush seating—create an elegant yet accessible atmosphere.
HISTORY
The Columbus Theatre (now Uptown) opened November 1, 1926, with the film "La Boheme." Built by Domenic Annotti and designed by Italian-American architect Oresto di Saia, the theater was specifically constructed as a testimonial to the Italian community. After fire code issues in 2009 and closure in 2024, local business owners Cory Brailsford and David Fiorillo (founders of Comedy Connection) purchased and restored it, reopening August 14, 2025.
