GREENSBORO
Greensboro is a town of roughly 750 people on the shore of Caspian Lake in Orleans County, where a 26,400-square-foot performing arts center has made this Northeast Kingdom village an unlikely cultural destination.
Highland Center for the Arts houses a 250-seat theater modeled after Shakespeare's Globe, a 100-seat intimate performance space, and a cafe. The year-round programming covers music, dance, theater, circus arts, cinema, and workshops — a scale of operation that defies the town's population.
Caspian Lake has drawn writers, scholars, and artists for generations, and the town still carries that literary-intellectual character. Hill Farmstead Brewery and Jasper Hill Farm cheese bring their own visitors, and Willey's Store in the village center functions as the community crossroads.
Tip: The village center sits at the southeast outlet of Caspian Lake. Summer triples the population with returning families, many of them fifth- or sixth-generation visitors.
