WAITSFIELD
BIG PICTURE THEATER & CAFE
ABOUT
Big Picture Theater & Cafe is a 2-screen community cinema at 48 Carroll Road in Waitsfield, Vermont, in the Mad River Valley. The venue combines film screenings with a full restaurant and bar offering craft cocktails, local beer, and a dinner menu. It is currently operating as The Big Picture Community Hub for the Arts, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit. The venue also hosts live music, educational programs, and community events.
WHAT TO EXPECT
Programming includes first-run films, art-house and independent cinema, classic film screenings, outdoor movies in summer, and live music and cultural events. The on-site Big Picture Bar & Cafe is open Thursday through Monday, 5:00-9:00 PM, serving as a gathering place before and after films. The venue also offers escape rooms, workshops, and animation camps.
HISTORY
The building originally opened as Edison's Studio Cinema in 1983, was renamed Mad River Flick in 1996 (closed 2002), and reopened as the Eclipse Theater in January 2003. It became the Big Picture Theater & Cafe when Waitsfield residents Claudia Becker and Eugene Jarecki purchased and renovated the space, relaunching it around 2004-2006. After closing in November 2024, it was reimagined as The Big Picture Community Hub for the Arts under The Bigger Picture Community Fund.
