BRATTLEBORO
HAWKS & REED PERFORMING ARTS CENTER
ABOUT
Hawks & Reed Performing Arts Center is a multi-venue performance complex at 289 Main Street in Greenfield, Massachusetts (note: listed in the Vermont venue file as Brattleboro, but physically located across the border in MA). The center occupies a 4-story brick building and includes four separate performance spaces. The Ballroom (main stage) serves as the primary concert venue with a capacity of 300+.
WHAT TO EXPECT
Programming spans nationally recognized touring acts, experimental theater, festivals, comedy, and community events. The four venues are the Ballroom, the Pushkin (a former bank building for recitals and events), the Perch (a 4th-floor rustic hall and black box theater), and the Wheelhouse (a basement club venue). The center also operates a coworking space called Greenspace Cowork.
HISTORY
The building is the George A. Arms Block, built in 1876 for coal wholesaler George Arms. In 2017, owner Steve Goldsher renamed the space from the Arts Block to Hawks & Reed Performing Arts Center, after the clothing retailer that occupied the downtown space in the 1800s. The name connects to Goldsher's family history of immigrant retailers in the region.
