MIDDLEBURY
MARQUIS THEATRE
ABOUT
The Marquis Theatre is a 2-screen art-house cinema at 65 Main Street in downtown Middlebury, Vermont, just a few blocks from Middlebury College. The theater was created by twinning the original single-screen auditorium: the main house occupies the orchestra level while a second, smaller theater was built under the balcony with its own projection booth. The venue also offers fresh southwestern food from its cafe.
WHAT TO EXPECT
The Marquis shows a mix of first-run films, independent cinema, and art-house selections. The on-site cafe adds a dining component to the moviegoing experience. The theater's downtown location makes it a regular gathering spot for both Middlebury residents and college students.
HISTORY
The building opened as the Campus Theatre on March 27, 1937. The original house had 510 orchestra seats and 211 balcony seats (total 721). In the mid-1980s, the theater was twinned by sectioning off the underside of the balcony, and it was later renamed the Marquis Theatre under new ownership. The facade received an update during the 2020 pandemic shutdown. The Marquis is the descendant of what was once part of the Graphic Theatre Corporation circuit across Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine.
