MONTPELIER
SAVOY THEATER
ABOUT
The Savoy Theater is a 2-screen art-house cinema at 26 Main Street in the heart of Montpelier, Vermont. The upstairs theater offers a more traditional screening room, while the downstairs space is configured like a private screening room with living-room-style seating and tables fashioned from 35mm movie reels. The venue also serves popcorn, beer, and wine.
WHAT TO EXPECT
The Savoy specializes in independent, foreign-language, and documentary films, along with classic film screenings. Each spring, the theater hosts the Green Mountain Film Festival, a gathering of global filmmakers celebrating new film modalities. The intimate, eclectic atmosphere and curated programming have made the Savoy a cultural anchor of downtown Montpelier.
HISTORY
The building's history dates to the early 1900s, when an Italian family named Massucco owned and operated a theater here. The name was changed to Savoy because the family hailed from the Savoy region of Italy. The modern Savoy Theater was founded in 1981 by Rick Winston and Andrea Serota, who established it as Vermont's go-to art-house cinema. The theater changed ownership in 2009 and continues its mission of presenting thought-provoking cinema.
