MIDDLEBURY
TOWN HALL THEATER
ABOUT
Town Hall Theater is a restored 19th-century performance hall located at 68 South Pleasant Street on the town green in Middlebury, Vermont. The main auditorium seats 232 in a state-of-the-art configuration, while the Anderson Studio provides a smaller, more intimate space for performances and gatherings. The building also houses the Will & Carolyn Jackson Gallery, which presents 8-10 exhibits per year showcasing Vermont artists.
WHAT TO EXPECT
Programming spans live theater, concerts, comedy, dance, film screenings, and community events. The theater hosts broadcasts from the National Theatre of Great Britain and the Metropolitan Opera on a big screen. Town Hall Theater serves as a cultural hub for the Addison County community with a mix of professional touring acts and local productions.
HISTORY
The original building was erected by the people of Middlebury in 1883 and opened as the Middlebury Opera House on February 13, 1884 with a 600-seat theater. The building was sold to private interests in the 1960s, and the original interior was largely destroyed. Town Hall Theater, Inc. was formed in 1997, and after extensive fundraising and historic restoration, the building reopened on July 26, 2008 as a modern performance venue.
