VERGENNES OPERA HOUSE
ABOUT
Vergennes Opera House is a historic performance venue located on the second floor of Vergennes City Hall on Main Street in Vergennes, Vermont, the smallest city in the state. The theater has a seating capacity of 300 with tables and comfortable chairs, a 12-by-9-foot projection screen and projector, a basic sound system, and theatrical lighting. It is managed by the Friends of the Vergennes Opera House (FVOH), a 100% volunteer nonprofit organization.
WHAT TO EXPECT
The opera house hosts concerts, theater productions, community events, and film screenings. It is also available for private event rentals including weddings and corporate meetings. Note: the opera house is currently under construction and unable to host events until May 2026.
HISTORY
The opera house was built in 1897 by the people of Vergennes, designed by architects Chappell and Smith of Rutland. It features the same painted main stage curtain visible today. After a 27-year closure, the opera house was restored and reopened in 1997, just in time for the building's 100th anniversary. Over the years it has hosted notable visitors including President Taft.
