VERGENNES
Vergennes bills itself as the smallest city in America at just two square miles, but its 1897 opera house and walkable downtown along Otter Creek give it an outsized cultural footprint in Addison County.
Vergennes Opera House anchors the city's performing arts calendar with concerts, theater, and community events in a historic venue that has been the center of cultural life here for over a century. The 400-seat hall books a range of acts from folk and roots music to touring theater companies.
The three-block downtown is built from 150-year-old local stone, with the opera house, Bixby Memorial Free Library, and Otter Creek Falls all within walking distance. Federal homes and Greek Revival cottages line the side streets, and Falls Park offers docks for boaters arriving via Otter Creek from Lake Champlain.
Tip: The city dock connects Vergennes to Lake Champlain via seven miles of navigable Otter Creek — an unusual inland port that brings boaters right to the downtown in summer.
