WESTON
Weston is a town of about 600 residents in Windsor County, nestled within the Green Mountain National Forest, where a preserved village center and two side-by-side country stores on Main Street look much as they did a century ago.
The Weston Theater Company, Vermont's oldest professional theater founded in 1937, stages productions on its flagship Playhouse stage in the village and at the Walker Farm arts center on a five-acre campus nearby. The company survived a fire in 1962, flooding from Tropical Storm Irene in 2011, and a pandemic — each time reopening with community support.
The Village Green and surrounding Federal and Greek Revival buildings form a National Register historic district. The Vermont Country Store, open since 1946, and the Weston Village Store, founded in 1891, sit across the street from each other in a town center that still feels disconnected from the modern highway grid.
Tip: Walker Farm, the theater company's second venue, runs year-round programming — check their calendar for off-season readings and workshops when the main Playhouse stage is dark.
