PROVIDENCE
AS220
ABOUT
AS220 is a non-profit, artist-run community arts organization in downtown Providence spanning over 100,000 square feet across multiple buildings. The space includes galleries, a 300-capacity Main Stage, print shops, darkrooms, dance studios, a recording studio, and affordable live/work studios for resident artists. Founded on the principle of unjuried, uncensored artistic expression.
WHAT TO EXPECT
The Main Stage hosts 8-12 events weekly spanning live music (punk, blues, experimental, electronic), performance art, poetry slams, film screenings, and cultural events. AS220 welcomes both emerging and established artists with a community-oriented, all-ages atmosphere. Over 51,000 visitors attend annually.
HISTORY
Founded in 1985 by Umberto Crenca, Susan Clausen, and Scott Seabolt after Crenca grew frustrated with barriers to access outside RISD and government-backed art scenes. The name comes from the original location at 220 Weybosset Street. AS220 relocated to Empire Street in 1992 and is now recognized nationally as a model for how artists can drive urban revitalization.
