PROVIDENCE
VETERANS MEMORIAL AUDITORIUM (THE VETS)
ABOUT
The Veterans Memorial Auditorium, known as "The VETS," is Rhode Island's premier performing arts theater with 1,931 seats on the Avenue of the Arts in downtown Providence. The intimate mid-size venue features flawless acoustics, a gilded proscenium arch, and an exquisite ceiling with allegorical murals including shields representing Rhode Island's original 39 communities. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
WHAT TO EXPECT
The VETS hosts orchestral concerts, ballet, comedy, tribute shows, and special events. Home to five resident arts organizations including the Rhode Island Philharmonic Orchestra and Festival Ballet Providence. Past performers include Chris Botti, Wynton Marsalis, Amy Schumer, Bryan Adams, and Mavis Staples. The largest professional stage in Rhode Island.
HISTORY
Construction began in 1928 but halted during the Depression. The state completed it in 1945, opening January 27, 1950 as Rhode Island's first professional performing arts venue. Nearly demolished for a parking lot in the 1980s, it was saved by community advocates who secured $5 million for restoration in 1988. A comprehensive 2015 renovation transformed it into a state-of-the-art facility.
