ABOUT
The Eugene O'Neill Theater Center is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit and the country's preeminent organization dedicated to the development of new works and new voices for the American theater. Located at 305 Great Neck Road in Waterford, Connecticut, the campus consists of renovated 19th-century mansions, farmhouses, and barns overlooking Long Island Sound.
WHAT TO EXPECT
The O'Neill's core programs include the National Playwrights Conference, National Music Theater Conference, National Theater Institute (undergraduate training), and the National Critics Institute. Summer programming includes staged readings and workshops of new plays and musicals with professional casts.
HISTORY
Founded in 1964 by George C. White, the O'Neill launched its National Playwrights Conference in 1965 and the National Theater of the Deaf soon after. The center received Tony Awards for Theatrical Achievement in 1979 and as Regional Theatre of the Year in 2010. President Barack Obama awarded the O'Neill the National Medal of Arts in 2016.
