ABOUT
Goodspeed Opera House, known as The Goodspeed, is a professional musical theater located at 6 Main Street in East Haddam, Connecticut, overlooking the Connecticut River. Together with the Terris Theatre in Chester, Goodspeed Musicals mounts new and revived musicals totaling more than 400 performances during the April to December season, attracting 120,000 patrons.
WHAT TO EXPECT
Goodspeed produces both classic revivals and new musicals on its main stage, standing at the forefront of producing and preserving the American musical. The organization also offers educational programs and community initiatives including the new SummerSong youth program. Season subscriptions and membership packages provide priority seating and free exchanges.
HISTORY
Built in 1876 by shipping and banking magnate William H. Goodspeed, the Opera House opened on October 24, 1877. After a period of neglect, the state condemned the building, but a group of citizens formed Goodspeed Musicals in 1959, purchased it for one dollar, and completed a restoration that rededicated the house on June 8, 1963.
