NEW HAVEN
SHUBERT THEATRE
ABOUT
The Shubert Theatre is a 1,600-seat historic performing arts venue located at 247 College Street in New Haven, Connecticut. The theater is one of the most historically significant pre-Broadway tryout houses in the United States, having hosted over 600 pre-Broadway tryouts including more than 300 world premieres and 50 American premieres. It anchors the cultural district adjacent to Yale University.
WHAT TO EXPECT
The Shubert Theatre presents Broadway touring productions, concerts, dance, opera, and special events. The venue hosts the Broadway in New Haven subscription series and collaborates with Yale Opera for performances. Recent programming includes Rent in Concert, Black Violin, Mrs. Doubtfire, and The Choir of Man. The theater also presents film screenings and special lecture events.
HISTORY
The Shubert Theatre opened on December 11, 1914, designed by New York architect Albert Swazey and built by the H.E. Murdock Construction Company. The theater struggled financially in the 1970s and closed in 1976. It reopened under city ownership in 1983, operated by the Columbus Association for the Performing Arts (CAPA). The theater's legacy as a pre-Broadway tryout venue made it the launchpad for countless shows that went on to Broadway success.
