THE BUSHNELL
ABOUT
The Bushnell Center for the Performing Arts is a major performing arts complex located at 166 Capitol Avenue in Hartford, Connecticut. The centerpiece is Mortensen Hall, a 2,800-seat auditorium that serves as Hartford's premier venue for Broadway touring productions, symphony concerts, ballet, and large-scale performing arts events. The complex also includes the 906-seat Belding Theater (VEN-050) and education and event spaces.
WHAT TO EXPECT
The Bushnell presents the Broadway in Hartford subscription series, hosting national touring productions of major musicals and plays. The venue also programs concerts, dance companies including the Connecticut Ballet, family shows, lectures, and community events. Mortensen Hall's large capacity accommodates full orchestra, grand opera, and Broadway-scale productions. The Bushnell is also available for corporate events and private rentals.
HISTORY
The Bushnell was completed in 1930 as a "living memorial" commissioned by Dotha Bushnell Hillyer in honor of her father, the Reverend Dr. Horace Bushnell (1802-1876), a Hartford minister, theologian, and civic leader. Mortensen Hall was designed by the architectural firm Corbett, Harrison, and MacMurray, the same designers behind Radio City Music Hall in New York City. The Maxwell M. and Ruth R. Belding Theater was added in 2002 as part of a major expansion that also included new lobbies and education facilities.
