THEATERWORKS
ABOUT
TheaterWorks is a year-round professional theater located at 233 Pearl Street in Hartford, Connecticut, housed in a 1927 Art Deco building now called City Arts on Pearl. The venue includes a main theater, a gallery space for visual arts exhibitions, and The Living Room for intimate performances.
WHAT TO EXPECT
TheaterWorks produces approximately five plays per season, presenting approximately 225 performances annually. Programming focuses on contemporary and provocative works, supplemented by gallery exhibitions and special events including cabaret performances. The theater occasionally partners with Hartford Stage for co-productions. Hours are Monday through Friday, 12:00-5:00pm.
HISTORY
Founded in 1985 by Steve Campo in a rented basement space on Pearl Street, the theater began with edgy works by David Mamet and Edward Albee. TheaterWorks purchased the building outright in 1993 and converted it into an arts center in 2008. Currently led by Producing Artistic Director Rob Ruggiero, the company has produced over 130 plays since its founding.
