GARDINER
Gardiner is a small Kennebec Valley city where Johnson Hall, one of Maine's oldest continuously operating performance venues, anchors a walkable Water Street downtown. Built in 1864 and fully renovated from 2022 to 2024, the restored opera house now features a 400-seat third-floor theater with modern sound and lighting.
Johnson Hall presents live music, theater, and community events in its newly renovated spaces. The free Summer Waterfront Concert Series runs Friday evenings from June through August at Gardiner's Waterfront Park on the Kennebec River. The city's Art Walk program is celebrating its 20th anniversary in 2025.
Gardiner has the feel of a small city punching above its weight in the arts. The recent Johnson Hall renovation signals serious community investment, and the waterfront concert series draws a loyal local audience.
Tip: Water Street is the main drag. Friday summer waterfront concerts start at 6 p.m. and are free.
