PORTLAND
SPACE GALLERY
ABOUT
SPACE is a nonprofit multi-disciplinary art center at 534-538 Congress Street in Portland, Maine. The venue has a capacity of approximately 300 and includes a main performance and gallery space, a dedicated gallery annex at 534 Congress, a window gallery, artist studios, and offices. SPACE also administers the Kindling Fund, a statewide regranting program supported by the Andy Warhol Foundation.
WHAT TO EXPECT
Programming spans live music, visual art exhibitions, film screenings, theater, lectures, and experimental performance. Music bookings tend toward indie, experimental, electronic, hip-hop, and genre-defying acts. The space functions as both a gallery and a performance venue, often combining disciplines in a single event.
HISTORY
SPACE was founded in 2002 by Jon Courtney and Todd Bernard. Its opening night on August 2, 2002 drew 500 people. The building, the Durant Block, has historical designation and previously housed a corset store, a pizza shop, and a Wendy's. SPACE became a 501(c)(3) in 2003 and in 2015 purchased its building through a capital campaign. It has received grants from the Andy Warhol Foundation, the National Endowment for the Arts, and the Mellon Foundation.
