BELFAST

Belfast is a midcoast harbor town with a growing arts identity, anchored by the Colonial Theatre on High Street — a historic cinema and stage venue that has operated since 1912. Downtown Belfast holds a National Main Street designation and blends art galleries, bookshops, and a year-round farmers' market with performance spaces.

The Colonial Theatre is a triplex cinema with a historic Art Deco stage, showing independent and mainstream films alongside live events. Under new leadership in 2025, the theater is expanding its live programming and partnering with regional arts organizations. A former downtown Opera House is also being restored as an additional performing arts space.

Belfast has the feel of a creative small town where artists and year-round residents coexist comfortably. The walkable downtown along Main and High Streets offers galleries, dining, and the theater within a few blocks, and the harbor adds a visual backdrop.

Tip: High Street connects to Main Street in the center of town. The Colonial Theatre and the farmers' market (one of the largest in Maine, with 70-plus vendors) are within walking distance of each other.
