BERWICK
Berwick is a rural southern Maine town where Hackmatack Playhouse has operated summer stock theater for over 50 years. The barn theater on Route 9, set on a working bison farm, produces professional and community plays and musicals each summer in a setting unlike any other venue in the state.
Hackmatack Playhouse runs a summer season of musicals and straight plays, typically four productions from July through August, alongside a youth theater camp and teen productions. The barn theater was founded in 1972 and the farm setting — complete with American bison and heritage pigs — makes the pre-show experience part of the draw.
Berwick is deep rural Maine, and Hackmatack Playhouse is a destination you seek out intentionally. The barn setting is charming and informal, and the mix of professional and developing actors gives shows a summer-stock energy.
Tip: Hackmatack is on Route 9. Arrive early to walk the farm before the show. The season runs July through August only.
