ELLSWORTH

Ellsworth is the gateway city to Acadia and the commercial center of Downeast Maine. Sitting along the Union River, it serves as the last major stop before Mount Desert Island and hosts The Grand, a restored 1938 Art Deco theater on Main Street that anchors the local entertainment scene.

The Grand presents a varied schedule of live theater, concerts, dance performances, comedy, and film screenings in its restored Art Deco auditorium. Main Street's downtown district, recently designated as a National Main Street community, supports a growing collection of shops, galleries, and restaurants around the venue.

Ellsworth is both a destination and a waypoint. Many visitors pass through en route to Acadia, but the revitalized downtown and Union River setting reward those who stop. Events at The Grand tend toward community-oriented programming with an affordable, welcoming feel.

Tip: Main Street is compact and walkable. If you are heading to or from Acadia, build in time for a show at The Grand or a meal along the river.
