STONINGTON
Stonington is a working fishing village at the southern tip of Deer Isle, home to Maine's busiest lobster port. The Stonington Opera House, restored by Opera House Arts and listed on the National Register of Historic Places, sits at the top of the commercial fishing pier and serves as the cultural anchor for the island community.
Opera House Arts presents theater, music, film, and storytelling in the restored opera house, with programming that runs year-round including the annual Island Women Speak event. The broader Deer Isle area supports artist studios and galleries, many connected to the Haystack Mountain School of Crafts.
Stonington has an end-of-the-road quality — remote, beautiful, and deeply tied to the working waterfront. The opera house functions as both cultural venue and community gathering space, and the arts scene on Deer Isle attracts a creative population that sustains programming beyond the summer season.
Tip: Stonington is at the end of Route 15 on Deer Isle. Plan for the drive and check the Opera House schedule in advance.
