ABOUT
Camden Opera House is a 489-seat municipal auditorium at 29 Elm Street in Camden, Maine, on the National Register of Historic Places. The facility includes the main auditorium with raked orchestra seating and balcony, two conference rooms, a lounge, and a mini-theater, all served by elevator. It is owned and managed by the Town of Camden.
WHAT TO EXPECT
Programming includes live music concerts, theater, dance, comedy, community events, and national conferences such as the Camden Conference and the Camden International Film Festival. The venue offers choose-your-own reserved seating for most shows and hosts over 28,000 patrons annually across more than 200 events.
HISTORY
The Camden Opera House was built in 1894 and was once the tallest building in Knox County. Opening night on June 6, 1894 featured the Boston Opera Company's performance of "Maritama." The interior was decorated by Willis Carleton of Rockport. The orchestra floor was raked in the mid-1950s, and the building was restored to its Victorian appearance in 1994. Notable performers have included John Legend, Wynton Marsalis, Johnny Winter, Little Feat, and Richie Havens.
