BIDDEFORD
CITY THEATER
ABOUT
City Theater is a roughly 500-seat performing arts venue housed within the Biddeford City Hall complex at the corner of Adams and Main Streets. The theater features a horseshoe balcony with both orchestra and balcony levels, and is recognized for its near-perfect acoustics. It is a contributing element to the Biddeford Main Street Historic District on the National Register of Historic Places.
WHAT TO EXPECT
City Theater Associates produces five community theater productions per year running from October through August, featuring both musicals and straight plays. The venue also hosts concerts, comedy shows, film screenings, and dance recitals throughout the year. Amenities include a full bar with local beer, wine, and hard cider, plus concessions.
HISTORY
The original opera house opened in October 1860. A fire on December 30, 1894 destroyed the entire city building. Maine architect John Calvin Stevens designed the replacement in the Colonial Revival style, which reopened January 20, 1896. The theater served as a movie house from the 1930s until closing in 1963. City Theater Associates incorporated in 1977 and reopened the theater in 1978 with the Norman Luboff Choir.
