HARRISON
DEERTREES THEATRE
ABOUT
Deertrees Theatre is a 350-seat performance venue nestled in the foothills of Southern Maine's Lake Region in Harrison. The theater was built of rose hemlock harvested from the property and features hand-carved beams, doors, trim, and light fixtures. It is listed on both Maine's State Register of Historic Landmarks and the National Register of Historic Places.
WHAT TO EXPECT
The theater presents approximately 40 productions during a summer season running from late June to September. Programming includes theater, concerts, and comedy — the venue also serves as home to the Sebago Long Lake Music Festival. The acoustics are considered exceptional due to the original wood construction.
HISTORY
The theatre was founded in 1936 by opera director Enrica Clay Dillon, who enlisted New York designer Harrison Wiseman to create her vision on the site of an old deer run. Construction cost over $60,000 — a significant sum at the time. The theater's back doors are the same ones seen in the 1954 film "White Christmas." After falling into disrepair by the mid-1980s, a group of citizens led by Dr. Allan Mills formed the Deertrees Foundation to restore the building, and it reopened in the early 1990s.
