ABOUT
Portland Stage Company is a LORT-affiliated professional theater (League of Resident Theatres) located at 25A Forest Avenue in Portland. The venue features a 286-seat mainstage and a 75-seat Studio Theater for new and experimental work. It operates within the Portland Performing Arts Center.
WHAT TO EXPECT
The company produces a season of seven mainstage shows playing to over 50,000 people annually. Programming includes contemporary dramas, comedies, and new works through initiatives like the Clauder Competition, the Little Festival of the Unexpected, and the From Away international writers festival in collaboration with the University of Iowa. Education programs serve grades K-12.
HISTORY
Portland Stage was founded in 1974 as the Profile Theatre, a touring company of young theater professionals. Portland became its permanent home in 1976, and the company adopted the name Portland Stage Company in 1978. It moved to its current Forest Avenue home in 1982 and became a member of LORT and TCG. In 2000, Portland Stage purchased the Portland Performing Arts Center, securing a permanent home.
