BROWNFIELD
STONE MOUNTAIN ARTS CENTER
ABOUT
Stone Mountain Arts Center is an intimate timber-frame performance hall in Brownfield, Maine, situated in the foothills of the White Mountains. The venue seats approximately 200 and is housed in a red clapboard barn behind a 200-year-old farmhouse. Dinner is served before most shows by reservation, and wine and beer are available through the on-site Queen Post Cafe.
WHAT TO EXPECT
Programming leans toward singer-songwriter, folk, Americana, country, and roots music, though jazz and blues acts also appear. The setting is personal and up-close, with performers playing to a seated dinner crowd in a year-round heated barn space. Swing dance nights are held periodically.
HISTORY
The venue was opened in August 2006 by singer-songwriter Carol Noonan and her husband Jeff Flagg, with country artist Mary Chapin Carpenter headlining the grand opening weekend. Despite its small size and remote location, SMAC has hosted acts including Lyle Lovett, Brandi Carlile, Los Lobos, Aaron Neville, Bela Fleck and the Flecktones, and the Indigo Girls. It received a Yankee Magazine Editor's Choice Award in 2009.
