ABOUT

The Waldo Theatre is a restored Art Deco movie house at 916 Main Street in Waldoboro, Maine. The theater currently seats 285 (reduced from an original 400) and features a Greek Revival-style facade with an Art Deco interior. It operates as a nonprofit cultural hub for the midcoast region, presenting films, concerts, theater, and community events.

WHAT TO EXPECT

Programming includes independent and classic films, live music, comedy, and youth arts education including after-school programs, summer workshops, and a youth arts program. The venue serves as a community gathering space aiming to drive cultural and economic activity in downtown Waldoboro.

HISTORY

The Waldo was designed by New York City architect Benjamin Schlanger and opened on December 9, 1936 with a screening of "Pennies from Heaven" at 35 cents a ticket. It was considered one of the best-designed small theaters in the country at the time. The theater closed in 2014 and underwent a major renovation beginning in 2019, reopening in June 2021 as a community arts center after decades of intermittent closure.
