AMHERST
Amherst is a college town defined by the University of Massachusetts flagship campus, Amherst College, and Hampshire College. The student population ensures a consistent audience for live music, while downtown's compact walkability makes venue-hopping easy.
Mullins Center on the UMass campus handles arena-scale shows and touring acts. The Drake, which reopened in 2022 after a 35-year hiatus, anchors downtown with live music nearly every night across multiple genres. Amherst Cinema programs independent and art-house film year-round. The UMass Department of Music and Dance stages over 250 performances annually.
The Five College energy keeps things young and curious. You will find experimental acts alongside folk and roots performers, and audiences are attentive and engaged. The town rewards spontaneity — walk into The Drake on any given evening and you are likely to find something worth staying for.
Tip: Downtown Amherst is centered on a few blocks around the town common. The Drake and Amherst Cinema are steps apart. For bigger shows, the Mullins Center is a short drive or bus ride up to campus.
