PUTNEY
Putney is a small Connecticut River valley town of about 2,700 residents, twelve miles north of Brattleboro, with more artisans and craftspeople per capita than any other town in Vermont.
Next Stage Arts occupies a renovated 1841 church in the village center, programming over 100 events per year including music, theater, and spoken word in a 200-seat hall. Yellow Barn, an international chamber music center founded in 1969, draws young professionals from three continents to its intimate 80-seat post-and-beam performance hall on Main Street.
Orchards, berry farms, and maple sugar houses surround a village center listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Putney School and The Grammar School lend an academic undercurrent to a town long tied to craft and the written word.
Tip: The annual Putney Craft Tour in winter spotlights local studios working in ceramics, glass, textiles, and wood — a useful map for finding the artisan culture between shows.
