BANGOR

Bangor is northern Maine's entertainment anchor. The city punches above its weight in live music thanks to the Maine Savings Amphitheater on the waterfront, which draws major national touring acts to a 15,000-capacity outdoor venue each summer. Beyond the big shows, a compact downtown supports year-round theater, comedy, and smaller performances.

The Maine Savings Amphitheater and Cross Insurance Center handle arena-scale events, from country headliners to classic rock tours. Downtown, Penobscot Theatre Company operates out of the historic Bangor Opera House, and Gracie Theatre at Husson University hosts acoustic and chamber performances. The nearby Collins Center for the Arts in Orono rounds out the classical and touring artist calendar. Morgan Hill Event Center in Hermon handles regional acts and private events.

Bangor has a practical, unpretentious energy. The waterfront concerts are a summer ritual, and downtown's First Friday Art Walks bring out a creative community that belies the city's modest size. Parking is easy and affordable compared to Portland.

Tip: Summer is peak season for the waterfront amphitheater — book early for headliners. In the off-season, check the Penobscot Theatre Company and Gracie Theatre for more intimate fare.
