PENOBSCOT THEATRE COMPANY
ABOUT
Penobscot Theatre Company is a year-round professional regional theater based in the Bangor Opera House, a 350-seat venue at the center of downtown Bangor. It is the only year-round professional regional theater in Northern Maine. The company holds a contract with Actors' Equity Association.
WHAT TO EXPECT
The company produces a season of professional plays and musicals, along with education programs through its Dramatic Academy offering classes and camps for kids, teens, and adults. The venue includes The Stage Door, a bar and restaurant available before and after performances. Programming ranges from classic dramas to contemporary works.
HISTORY
The company traces its roots to 1973 when it began as Acadia Repertory Theatre, founded by George Vafiadis and Lou Collier. Penobscot Theatre was formally incorporated as a nonprofit in 1983. The company acquired the Bangor Opera House in 1997 — a building originally rebuilt in 1920 as an Egyptian-Art Deco vaudeville house. The facade was restored in 2007-08 and the 322 orchestra chairs were replaced as part of ongoing renovations.
