FLORENCE
BOMBYX
ABOUT
Bombyx Center for Arts & Equity is a nonprofit performance venue at 130 Pine Street in Florence, Massachusetts, housed in a historic church built in 1861. The space serves as a concert venue, art exhibition space, and community gathering place, located adjacent to the Sojourner Truth Memorial.
WHAT TO EXPECT
Expect world-class programming focused on jazz, acoustic roots, and global music in a sanctuary setting with period architecture. The venue participates in the Card to Culture program, offering 50% discounts to EBT, WIC, and ConnectorCare cardholders.
HISTORY
The building was constructed by abolitionists connected to the Northampton Association of Education and Industry (NAEI), a utopian community founded in 1842 on principles of anti-slavery, gender equality, and religious tolerance. The name "Bombyx" references the silk moth imported to the region as a rejection of southern cotton. Frederick Douglass, William Lloyd Garrison, and Sojourner Truth were all connected to this site.
