CAPE COD MELODY TENT
ABOUT
Cape Cod Melody Tent is a 2,300-seat seasonal tent theater-in-the-round at 21 West Main Street in Hyannis, Massachusetts. Along with its sister venue the South Shore Music Circus in Cohasset, it is one of only two continuously operated tent theaters-in-the-round in the United States. No seat is more than 50 feet from the stage.
WHAT TO EXPECT
The Melody Tent operates from May through September, presenting national touring concerts spanning rock, pop, country, comedy, and family shows. The intimate in-the-round configuration and proximity to the stage create a distinctive experience. In 1994, the original canvas tent was replaced with a state-of-the-art vinyl tent featuring a specially designed venting system.
HISTORY
The venue originated in 1950 when Broadway actress Gertrude Lawrence set up a tent on Main Street in Hyannis, calling it the Cape Cod Music Circus and producing summer stock shows. Opening night was July 4, 1950. In 1953, the tent relocated to its current site near the west end rotary. A 1954 naming contest produced the name Cape Cod Melody Tent. The venue's original 1,000-seat capacity was expanded over the decades to its current 2,300 seats.
