MEDFORD
CHEVALIER THEATRE
ABOUT
Chevalier Theatre is a ~1,900-seat performance venue at 30 Forest Street in Medford, Massachusetts, built as part of the Medford High School complex. The Greek Revival-style auditorium features a double elliptical ceiling for improved acoustics, a grand curved 711-seat balcony, and Art Deco interior elements. It was the largest auditorium of its kind in Massachusetts when built.
WHAT TO EXPECT
The Chevalier Theatre presents touring concerts, comedy, dance, and community events. The intimate Art Deco interior and strong acoustics make it a sought-after venue for mid-size touring acts in the Greater Boston market. The theater is located minutes from downtown Boston, accessible via public transit.
HISTORY
The theatre was built in 1939 as a Works Progress Administration (WPA) project and dedicated on March 7, 1940 to Godfrey DeCourcelles Chevalier, a Medford High School graduate and pioneering U.S. Navy aviator. In 1922, Lt. Commander Chevalier made aviation history as the first U.S. naval aviator to land an airplane on a moving ship, the USS Langley. The building has undergone multiple renovations to preserve its historic character while updating technical systems.
