CITIZENS BANK OPERA HOUSE
ABOUT
The Citizens Bank Opera House is a 2,600-seat performing arts venue at 539 Washington Street in Boston's Theatre District, spread across over 100,000 square feet. It serves as the home of the Boston Ballet and a primary stop for touring Broadway productions.
WHAT TO EXPECT
Expect a richly ornate theater interior combining French and Italian architectural styles, with deep balconies and detailed plasterwork throughout. The programming centers on Broadway touring shows, ballet seasons, opera, and large-scale special events.
HISTORY
The theater opened on October 29, 1928 as the B.F. Keith Memorial Theatre, a movie palace designed by Thomas White Lamb. It was rededicated in 1980 as a home for the Opera Company of Boston, closed, and then reopened in 2004 after a major restoration. Citizens Bank acquired naming rights in 2018.
