BOSTON
CUTLER MAJESTIC THEATRE
ABOUT
Cutler Majestic Theatre is a 1,172-seat Beaux-Arts theater at 219 Tremont Street in Boston's Theater District, owned and operated by Emerson College. Designed by architect John Galen Howard, it is one of three theaters commissioned in Boston by Eben Dyer Jordan, son of the founder of the Jordan Marsh department store chain. The theater is named after donors Ted and Joan Benard-Cutler.
WHAT TO EXPECT
The venue hosts professional touring productions, concerts, dance performances, and Emerson College student productions in its ornate auditorium. It serves as a primary performance space for ArtsEmerson, Emerson College's professional presenting program. The restored Beaux-Arts interior features elaborate ornamentation characteristic of early 20th-century theater design.
HISTORY
The Majestic opened in 1903 as a legitimate theater. It was converted for vaudeville in the 1920s and became a movie house under Sack Cinemas in 1956, operating as the Saxon Theatre until 1983. Emerson College purchased the theater in the mid-1980s and reopened it in 1987. The college completed a final restoration phase in 2003, returning the building to its original Beaux-Arts appearance.
