BOSTON
EMERSON COLONIAL THEATRE
ABOUT
Emerson Colonial Theatre is a ~1,700-seat historic theater at 106 Boylston Street in downtown Boston, Massachusetts. It is the oldest continuously operating theater in Boston. The interior was designed by architect Clarence Blackall and features ornate period detailing and a warm, intimate atmosphere.
WHAT TO EXPECT
The Emerson Colonial Theatre presents touring Broadway productions, pre-Broadway tryouts, concerts, and special events as part of the Broadway In Boston series. The theater is operated by London-based ATG Entertainment (Ambassador Theatre Group) under a 40-year lease with Emerson College. The venue's Boston theater district location places it alongside other major houses including the Boch Center and the Citizens Bank Opera House.
HISTORY
The Colonial Theatre opened on December 20, 1900 with a sold-out performance of Ben-Hur, attended by Winston Churchill. It was financed by Frederick Lothrop Ames Jr. In January 2017, Emerson College announced the ATG partnership, and both parties committed to substantial capital improvements. The theater reopened in July 2018 with the world premiere of the musical Moulin Rouge! prior to its Broadway transfer. The venue celebrated its 125th anniversary in December 2025.
