GROTON
GROTON HILL MUSIC CENTER
ABOUT
Groton Hill Music Center is a 126,000-square-foot performing arts and music education campus on 110 acres of former farmland at 122 Old Ayer Road in Groton, Massachusetts. The facility features a 1,000-seat concert hall with an outdoor lawn extension for 1,300 additional listeners, a 300-seat recital hall (Meadow Hall), and a 50-seat performance space.
WHAT TO EXPECT
The center presents classical, chamber, jazz, folk, and world music concerts in acoustically designed halls by Epstein Joslin Architects, the firm behind Rockport's Shalin Liu Performance Center. The music school employs over 70 instructors teaching more than 1,500 students across 35 private instruction spaces. Meadow Hall includes a Steinway & Sons concert grand piano donated by Paul Matisse.
HISTORY
Groton Hill Music Center evolved from Indian Hill Music, a nonprofit founded in 1985 with an $11,000 annual budget. In 1996, the organization purchased its first permanent home in Littleton, transforming a small farmstand into a school. A substantial anonymous donation in 2014 enabled purchase of the Groton property, and after nearly eight years of planning and construction, the new center opened in September 2022.
