HUNTINGTON THEATRE
ABOUT
Huntington Theatre is a 739-seat proscenium theater at 264 Huntington Avenue in Boston, Massachusetts, on the Avenue of the Arts. The building was designed by J. William Beal's Sons in the Georgian Revival style and originally opened in 1925 as the Repertory Theatre. It serves as the home of the Huntington Theatre Company, Boston's largest professional theater company.
WHAT TO EXPECT
The Huntington produces a full season of plays and musicals, including premieres, classic adaptations, and contemporary works. In addition to the main stage, the company operates the Stanford Calderwood Pavilion at the Boston Center for the Arts, which houses the 370-seat Virginia Wimberly Theatre and the 200-seat Nancy and Edward Roberts Studio Theatre.
HISTORY
The Huntington Theatre Company was founded in 1982 by Boston University under President John Silber and was separately incorporated as an independent nonprofit in 1986. The company has received over 150 Elliot Norton and IRNE Awards and won the Tony Award for Outstanding Regional Theatre. The Huntington Theatre underwent a major restoration and reopened in 2022, with plans for a new East Wing opening in 2027.
