GREAT BARRINGTON
MAHAIWE PERFORMING ARTS CENTER
ABOUT
Mahaiwe Performing Arts Center is a restored historic theater at 14 Castle Street in Great Barrington, Massachusetts, seating just under 700 in the main hall. In 2025, the venue opened the Indigo Room, an auxiliary space with flexible capacity up to 150, in a former firehouse next door.
WHAT TO EXPECT
Expect a year-round schedule of live music, theater, dance, film screenings, and literary events in a beautifully restored early 20th-century theater. The Berkshires setting draws both regional audiences and summer visitors. Programming ranges from national touring acts to HD broadcasts from London's National Theatre.
HISTORY
The Mahaiwe first opened on September 26, 1905, with the musical comedy "Happyland." The theater hosted acts including John Philip Sousa and vaudeville performers before transitioning to silent films in 1914 and talkies in 1929. After decades of decline, renovation began in 2003 under new leadership. The theater reopened as the Mahaiwe Performing Arts Center on May 29, 2005.
