The arena seats approximately 6,455 permanent seats plus 222 club seats, with concert capacity reaching up to 8,000. The attached convention center provides additional exhibit and event space.
WHAT TO EXPECT
The MassMutual Center hosts concerts, family shows, sporting events, trade shows, and conventions. It is the home arena of the Springfield Thunderbirds of the American Hockey League (AHL). The facility has hosted an AHL franchise continuously since it opened, previously the Springfield Indians (1972-1994) and the Springfield Falcons (1994-2016).
HISTORY
The arena opened in 1972 as the Springfield Civic Center and was considered the largest arena in the region at the time. A $71 million renovation beginning in 2003 was completed in fall 2005, including arena renovations and the addition of a convention center. Massachusetts Mutual Life Insurance Company acquired naming rights in 2005, renaming the facility the MassMutual Center.
