METHUEN
METHUEN MEMORIAL MUSIC HALL
ABOUT
Methuen Memorial Music Hall is a nonprofit concert hall at 192 Broadway in Methuen, Massachusetts, built specifically to house the Great Organ, the first concert organ in the United States. The hall seats approximately 600 people and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The venue operates as a cultural center presenting concerts and events year-round.
WHAT TO EXPECT
The flagship programming is a 15-week Summer Organ Concert series featuring the Great Organ, alongside performances of many other kinds throughout the year. The hall's acoustics are designed around the organ, and events include classical concerts, choral performances, and community programs.
HISTORY
The Great Organ was built by the E.F. Walcker Company of Ludwigsburg, Germany, and installed at the Boston Music Hall in 1863. After the Boston Symphony Orchestra's founding reduced interest in organ recitals, the organ was removed in 1884 and eventually purchased at auction by Edward F. Searles for $1,500. Searles commissioned architect Henry Vaughan to design a dedicated concert hall, which was completed in 1909. The building was incorporated as a nonprofit in 1946 and renamed Methuen Memorial Music Hall.
