ROCKPORT
SHALIN LIU PERFORMANCE CENTER
ABOUT
Shalin Liu Performance Center is a 330-seat concert hall at 37 Main Street in Rockport, Massachusetts, operated by Rockport Music. The hall was designed by Epstein Joslin Architects with acoustics by R. Lawrence Kirkegaard and features a shoebox layout with American Walnut and Douglas fir wrapped steel beams. The building is framed in concrete to isolate the hall from external noise.
WHAT TO EXPECT
Programming spans classical, jazz, folk, and pop concerts presented by Rockport Music throughout the year. The hall's acoustics are designed for unamplified and amplified performances alike. The intimate 330-seat configuration provides close audience-to-performer proximity in a visually striking setting.
HISTORY
Rockport Music was founded in 1981 as the Rockport Chamber Music Festival by soprano Lila Deis, pianist/composer David Alpher, and businessman Paul Sylva. Early concerts were hosted by the Rockport Art Association. Under Artistic Director David Deveau, the Shalin Liu Performance Center was developed on the site of the Haskins Building, a Victorian-era structure from the 1860s. Named for philanthropist Shalin Liu, the center was completed and officially opened on June 10, 2010.
