SHEA THEATER ARTS CENTER
ABOUT
Shea Theater Arts Center is a 330-seat performance venue at 71 Avenue A in Turners Falls, Massachusetts (a village in the town of Montague). The theater provides performance space for a range of live arts in the heart of the Franklin County cultural corridor.
WHAT TO EXPECT
Programming spans folk, pop, rock, swing, jazz, country, and traditional music alongside theatrical productions including musical comedy, drama, and political satire. The venue also hosts magic shows, children's shows, and silent film revivals.
HISTORY
The Shea Theater was established by Denis Shea and opened on Valentine's Day, February 14, 1927. The lobby originally featured a lantern imported from Madrid and Spanish-style wrought iron fixtures. Shea ran the theater until 1943 and died in 1945. It continued under various owners until closing in 1956. In 1973, the Renaissance Community bought the building and used it as a recording studio. In 1986, the Franklin County Community Development Corp purchased it and launched a restoration project.
