ABOUT
Somerville Theatre is an independent movie theater and live entertainment venue at 55 Davis Square in Somerville, Massachusetts. The main theater seats approximately 900 and features Dolby EX Digital sound with 24 surround speakers. The complex includes multiple smaller screening rooms in addition to the main auditorium.
WHAT TO EXPECT
The venue programs first-run and repertory films alongside live concerts, comedy, and special events. The main stage has hosted nationally touring musical acts. The theater is located steps from the Davis Red Line T stop and shares its building with the Crystal Ballroom live event space.
HISTORY
The Somerville Theatre opened on May 11, 1914 with 1,100 seats, built by Joseph Hobbs and designed by Funk & Wilcox. Through the 1930s-1960s, it operated as a prime neighborhood movie house. In 1982, lessee Garen Daly revived live performances for the first time since the 1930s. In 1990, F.E.I. Theatres assumed operation and undertook major renovations. Notable bookings include U2 in 2009 and Bruce Springsteen for two solo acoustic shows in 2003.
