STANFORD CALDERWOOD PAVILION
ABOUT
Stanford Calderwood Pavilion is a 36,000-square-foot theater complex at the Boston Center for the Arts (BCA) on 527 Tremont Street in Boston's South End. The facility contains the 372-seat Virginia Wimberly Theatre and the flexible Nancy and Edward Roberts Studio Theatre (accommodating 157 to 235 patrons depending on configuration), along with rehearsal rooms and public lobbies. It is a joint venture between BCA and the Huntington Theatre Company.
WHAT TO EXPECT
The Calderwood Pavilion has hosted many of Boston's acclaimed theater companies, including The Huntington Theatre Company, SpeakEasy Stage Company, and Company One Theatre. Since opening, the venue has welcomed close to one million showgoers, more than 4,000 performances, and over 300 organizations. The two-theater design allows simultaneous productions of varying scale.
HISTORY
The Calderwood Pavilion opened in 2004 and was the first new theater built in Boston since the 1920s. It was named for Stanford Calderwood, a philanthropist and arts patron. The pavilion was conceived as part of the Boston Center for the Arts campus, which occupies a cluster of historic buildings in the South End, and filled a critical need for mid-sized professional theater space in the city.
