PROVINCETOWN
THE CROWN & ANCHOR
ABOUT
The Crown & Anchor is a multi-venue entertainment complex at 247 Commercial Street in Provincetown, Massachusetts. The complex features cabaret venues seating 130 and 240, Provincetown's largest nightclub (Paramount), and the Wave video bar, totaling three stages and six bars. It also operates as an inn with guest rooms.
WHAT TO EXPECT
Programming centers on drag shows, Broadway singers, stand-up comics, and variety acts across its multiple stages throughout the summer season. The Crown & Anchor is a key venue for many of Provincetown's LGBTQ+ events and celebrations. Multiple shows run simultaneously across the different performance spaces during peak season.
HISTORY
The building originated in the mid-19th century when Timothy P. Johnson built the Central House as a public hall, bowling alley, and saloon. Allen Reed purchased it in 1868 and expanded it into the town's largest hotel. It became the Sea Horse Inn in the 1950s before Staniford Sorrentino reopened it as the Crown & Anchor Motor Inn in 1962. Much of the building was destroyed in a February 1998 fire and rebuilt in 1999. After 20 years under Bill Dougal and Rick Murray, ownership passed to locals Jonathan Hawkins and Paolo Martini in 2021. Tryst Hospitality acquired the property in 2025-2026 and plans to relaunch the hotel portion while preserving the Crown & Anchor identity for entertainment operations.
